after a great weekend of walking along the Thames path 43 miles covered in 2 days Smile

But this is how my ankles looked... http://www.flickr.com/photos/sally_in_norfolk/4615436854/

heat rash caused by sweating and then over tight socks i think but very painful at end of day Sad

so walking shoes a must for summer walking i think, anyone else wear shoes and not boots or get this rash ???

Definitely ditch the boots if they are big heavy clodhoppers. Shoes would be far better for easy trails.
For hillwalking, the choice is not simply boots vs low-cut trail shoes as many forum threads seem to imply. I use very lightweight mids: they are only a little higher cut than shoes but that extra bit makes all the difference, it's enough to prevent 'roll' and twisting on rough slopes but still allows good freedom of movement and flexing to adapt to the terrain.

That rash looks like a really nasty case, maybe an allergic reaction or heat rash or both, but I'm sure you're not alone. It's worth trying socks of different materials, manmade fibre vs wool (such as Smartwool) to see if that makes a difference.
Fairly tight socks are a good thing in theory, they should help to prevent movement relative to the skin and hence blistering.

Venture Sport and Cotswold stock them in Norwich Sally. Also Salomon are good. I recommend you say good buy to boots.
